About Ranthambore National Park
Meet the wild!
The varied landscapes within the park are attractive and there is even a
huge thousand-year-old fort within the park, which can still be explored.
Since 1972 the sanctuary came under the project tiger scheme, which aims to
preserve the highly endangered tiger population in its natural habitat.
Ranthambore has proved to be one of the most successful of the sanctuaries
involved and tiger sightings are relatively frequent here.
»
The Name : The name Ranthambore is derived from two hills in the area,
Ran and Thanbhor. Another version says that Ranthambore was once called Rana
Stambhapura or City of the Pillars of War.
» The Flora & Fauna : This dry deciduous habitat
has a rich diversity of flora and fauna, with over two hundred species of
birds, a wide array of mammals and reptiles and ofcourse the tiger. During
the 1980's the tigers of Ranthambore were the most visible compared to
anywhere in the world. They performed much to the pleasure of those that
observed. The tiger and its behaviour patterns revealed many new dimensions
to its life and in a way it was rewriting its own natural history. But by
the late eighties and into the 1990's a gradual decline started in tiger
sightings and the process culminated in 1992 with the seizure of a tiger and
a leopard skin from a gang of poachers.
» Discover wildness and beyond : A thousand year old
fort also blends amicably with the background. Pure sands of Dhok
interspersed with grasslands at the plateaus, meadows in valleys and
luxuriant foliage around the canals make-up the jungle. Three big lakes -
Padam Talab (meaning Lake), Malik Talab and Raj Bagh - are similar
turquoises studded in the vast forest.
» Wild Extravaganza - Photographic Tours : Photographing
the images you come across, is indeed the best way to explore the wildness
that plays in the hands of nature. Ranthambore is notoriously difficult to
access by the independent photographer, booking jeeps and getting good
routes on the park's route system is the best way to experience this
splendor.
