Located at the outskirt (11 km) of Jaipur city, Amber or Amer served as the capital of the princely state of the Kachchawa Rajputs for nearly 600 years, till 1727 A.D when the new city of Jaipur was established. The pride of Amer is an old bastion known as Amber Fort, which stands high on a rocky spur of the Aravalli ranges.It was built by Raja Man Singh of Kachhawa clan and renovated by Sawai Jai Singh.

To reach this magnificent citadel, elephant rides are available. Caparisoned Elephants take tourists up to the Amber Fort from the foothill. The mahout (driver) would sit astride the elephant's neck, and direct the animal with his feet, and with a hafted hook and spike called an ankush. Along with the mahout, tourists sit astride the animal in a Howdah - a wooden framed seat, on elephant back like shuttle taxis. Two persons can sit together. A ride on the back of the elephant back is the best way to reach each and every corner of this massive fort without any problem.

One side elephant ride to Amber Fort will cost Rs 570. Elephant will drop you to the Amber Fort and you have to return by foot.
