With three of my other friends Jasmine, Tara and Yughaal
---all my college mates, I sojourn to Jaisalmer desert region. We took a
night rail-coach for the town from Delhi railway station. Jaisalmer is 897km
from Delhi, the coach took almost 10 to 12 hours, and therefore we preferred
a night journey. Morning, we were in the golden city of Jaisalmer,
resplendent with its rich culture and heritage.

We
took a local bus from the city for our onwards destination to Sam Sand
Dunes, it was an enticing drive through the desert land with camel and
peacocks running around creating calm cruise full of prominent
eventualities.
The famous Sam Sand Dunes are the charm of a Sam Village amidst the Thar
Desert. As our friends, back in Delhi told us before only, that the true way
of enjoying the Rajasthan Desert was to see the sun set there. We had a plan
to stay over night at the dunes. There is a Desert National Park located at
the edge of the Sam Village-quite surprising- to think of an animal reserve
in the desert area. We couldn't get time to visit the park, better next
time. Almost after one and a half-hour drive covering the distance of 45km
from Jaisalmer, we reached the beautiful Sam. The entire region was dotted
with small and big sand dunes, Jasmine and Tara were so excited that they
even didn't waited for us and ran to climb the dunes. At the first it seemed
very easy, conquering those majestic heights, but it took out all energy
from us by the time we reach the peak----"Oh, God! It simple wonderful,
absolutely a new world," yelled Jasmine. No doubt, it was the most
amazing sight, till your eyes reached, one could only trace dunes and dunes
dotted with cactus and needle like shrubs. For our way back from the mount
dunes, we slide down on the cool sand----a continuous non stop slope, that
took us down in almost 10 minutes-children may not enjoy that much on their
slide swing as much we enjoyed on our sand swing.
We returned to our desert halt - a hot tea with some snacks, were waiting
for us-, which was that hours requirement. We had tented accommodations
there, enjoying a cup of tea and watching the exotic shifting of sands,
every time making a new heap of sand was fantastic. The sand glossed
underneath the pleasant evening sun emphasized every mien of a desert. The
large tracts and miles of barren sand dunes kept modifying color and
shifting every minute giving a feel, that an artist is fabricating a
masterwork. It was just bizarre. Much time was spent in viewing this
picturesque sight, guessing as to which way the wind will blow and the
rippling dunes would cause another breathtaking mirage. Poor, jasmine and
Tara were also extremely busy splashing sand out of their pockets, purses,
caps, shoes and what not, while sliding down the dunes, the sand enwrapped
them with its silent appeal.

After
getting fresh up and regaining energy, we headed for camel safari, which
took us in the more interiors of the sand dunes about 1.5 km, of the sandy
panorama that we had been admiring from a far all this while. Sam is truly a
photographer's ecstasy, with its all-embracing dunes stretching up to the
infinity and then merging with the colors of the dusk.
We had a most exquisite sunset vista, Yughal took some of the photographs
of the soon vanishing glory, we were almost there for one hour, enjoying the
sun setting and its left over traces in the horizon. We came back to our
tented accommodation to enjoy the delicious delicacies of Rajasthani
Cuisine. It was a time for a pure vegetarian meal comprising Dal-Batti,
Puris, urad dal and Ghewar. There was also the provision of barbecue for the
non-vegetarian visitors.
To our surprise night has some more attraction for us in its vast store, it
was a cultural evening where a group of local artisans performed their local
songs and dances adorned with beautiful colorful ghagra- cholis, heavy
jewelry and their typical local musical instruments. We all sat around them
and enjoyed their songs and dances. Little boys played the music while the
women flock danced on the tunes with their men, singing in their rural yet,
graceful voice. After some time, we also became a part of the dancing
group---Tara was fast at learning the traditional steps of dance where as
Yughal was busy taking the photos of the dancing lady. There was a huge bone
fire -a prerequisite of the cool desert -as the night was reaching its
summit, the temperature was falling down drastically. Morning we got up
quite early, for our another round to watch the sun rising, The morning sun
was more fresh and glowing then its previous evenings charm, this time we
walk up to the point, visiting the small village of Sam. I could feel the
life in the village is simple, with simple people-where ladies were
indulging in lightning their fireplaces to prepare the exotic food, where as
their men's were getting ready to go for their livelihood.
We returned to our camp side to have our break fast with traditional
Rajasthani items. The trip to this desert region had immense power to hold
you to enjoy its nonstop charisma - at one point of time you feel that this
is only your world and you don't want to return.
